Living Among Three Different Tribes

Indonesia. An archipelagic country and is rich with its natural resources, beautiful panoramas, islands, and, for all people have come to know, cultures. There are many cultures Indonesia has. These cultures have been the power to show to the world the uniqueness of Indonesia. Here, each and every place someone will happen to visit, he or she will be experiencing culture differs from one place to another. The culture consists of many things which are vary from one place to another; such as traditional dances, traditional songs and musical instruments, folklores, food, traditional languages and tribes. It is said to be over than 300 tribes spread all over Indonesia.

Talking about tribes, I live with parents whose tribes are different. My grandparents from my mother came all the way to Jakarta from Padang Sidimpuan (South Tapanuli), North Sumatra. So, clearly, they are Bataknese, and so does my mother. Even though my mother was born in Jakarta, but her blood is a true Bataknese. The way she talks (said to be louder than any tribes else, and which is true), the way she thinks, the way she makes a quick decision, and the way she cooks. She doesn’t cook all kinds of the traditional food, but I’m pretty sure, the way she cooks has been influenced by the cooking heritage of her tribe. For example, someone who comes from other tribes may not cook mashed daun singkong (leaves grown from cassava trees). But Bataknese, so do my grandmother and my mother, make the cassava leaves mashed first before it cooked with coconut milk and anchovies. Sometimes they add chopped eggplants cooked with it.

On the other hand, my father’s father came from Gombong, Central Java; while his (my father’s) mother came from Samarinda, East Kalimantan. Although there are two different tribes in my father’s blood, but I have seen that the Javanese tribe is pretty dominant on him. My dad likes food that has a little bit sweet taste in it, just like Javanese food. Gudeg and krecek will always be my father’s number one dish; and gemblong (mashed cassava cooked with sugar palm) will be his favourite snack, served with wedang jahe (made of ginger boiled with water and sugar; sometimes he likes to mix it with milk). Also, my father doesn’t make a quick decision like my mother, just like a Javanese.

Besides living with parents of different tribes, I also experience living in Jakarta with its multicultural people. There, I live alone in a rented room from a local family resident, which is a Batavian. Mrs. Atiek, the owner of the house, has couple times made me some Batavian dishes like asinan Betawi and ketupat sayur Betawi. I can’t best describe the different between those dishes; I know less the contrast of them. Asinan Betawi differs to asinan Bogor since there are peanuts served in asinan Betawi. While ketupat sayur Betawi contrast to ketupat sayur Padang usually seen from the vegetables they used; Batavian use chayotes in their dish while Padangnese use nangka, buncis and red-coloured kerupuk in their dish.

I have friends that are also come from various tribes, but many of them are the real Batavians. I like when one of my friend talks in a Batavian accent and language: “Yailah, babe gue mah kagak begono, yak, dia mana bisa dah megang hp. Lah orang ada sms masuk di hp nya malah di-halo-halo-in. Gaptek bener dah pokoknya babe gue.” (“Well, my dad is unlikely to be like that, he can’t use any hand phone. When there’s an incoming text message, he picks it up and says hallo as if there’s an incoming call.”). Sometimes I hold myself for laughing because I, personally, hear this accent and language as something kind of funny.

With these tribes living very close to me, I can feel the rich of Indonesia every day. When I’m home, I meet a mixed culture between Sumatra and Java. And that explains why I sometimes act so shy, and why I sometimes talk very loud. I love eating sayur daun singkong as much as gemblong, tempe mendoan and lanting be my favourite snack. I can’t play the gamelan (Javanese traditional music instrument) or even to be a sinden, but I like the sound of the music. I can do a little dance and sing Bataknese songs like Butet, Raphita Na Dua, and Sinanggar Tulo. Well, I must say that it happened to me once back then, when I was in elementary school commemorating Kartini’s Day, I wore kebaya and batik (traditional outfit of Javanese) mixed with ulos (Bataknese’ traditional cloth) to describe the two tribes I’ve been living with.

However, when I’m out, I am with friends who, I can say, are the ”owner” of the land Jakarta. Most of them are pretty talkative, fussy and captious. But these kinds of people, if I don’t have them with me, probably will never make a fun and cheering atmosphere. I call one of my friends “eneng”, since she is a total Batavian and eneng is a call for an unmarried Batavian girl. Friends with her means I am also friends with the food like soto betawi, asinan betawi and kerak telor, which is my favourite. Yes, I am in paradise.

To conclude, having parents, people and friends with different tribes makes me feel rich indeed. I can proudly represent the rich of Indonesia with mixed outfit like what I did long ago; I have two sides of personality and behaviour as the result of my parents’ marriage; I can often experience the contrary rhythm of music of my parents’ tribes; I have friends who are able to build a cheering vibe; and I can taste different traditional food from different origin tribes among me. And that what makes me fall in love to the richness of Indonesia. Indonesia, oh Indonesia.

Boy vs Chiko

"Boy Verse"

meong~ meong~ meeenngg~~

(agak lebay si kakak namain Chiko agak ke-Jepang-Jepang-an gitu. dia aja tradisional banget gitu.).

TABEL FAKTA PERBEDAAN BOY VS CHIKO

jadi liat kaan perbedaanya? udah tentu aku sama Chiko ga ada hubungan sodara apa-apa. tapiii karena kakak kita sama, ya terpaksa deh kita jadi sodaraan. -___-

kenapa aku sebel banget sama Chiko? karena:
  1. Chiko lebih disayang sama kakak. Chiko selalu diizinin main keluar rumah dari pagi, terus pulang malem. sedangkan aku ngga! sebeeeeeeeeeelllll kakak ga adiiiiiiiiiiiiiilllllllllll!!!!!
  2. Chiko lebih dimanja sama kakak. kalo Chiko main, biasanya dia 3 hari ga pulang pulang. naah, setiap dia pulang dengan tanda suara meongannya yang cempreng dan gak elegan sama sekali itu, dia selalu disambut kakak "eeh Chiko, udah pulang sayang? kemana aja kamu? laper puss? ayo sini makan" terus langsung disediain mangkok yang penuh makanan. sedangkan aku, kalo aku pulang kakak malah ngomel "Boy! kemana aja kamu?! lama banget sih mainnya udah kakak bilangin jangan suka main main ke depan! ntar kotor!"
  3. Terus, kalo Chiko udah di rumah, abis dikasih makan sama kakak, Chiko pasti dielus-elus deh sama kakak. aku ditinggalin sendirian. aku kan sebel, aku kan juga mau dielus-elus!
  4. Chiko dikasih makan ikan masakan mamah setiap mamah masak ikan. sedangkan aku ngga! kata kakak aku gak boleh makan ikan yang udah pake garem. terus kenapa Chiko boleeeehhh???? aku kan juga mau kaaakk makan ikan! kucing itu makannya ikaann! huhuhu..
  5. Chiko jarang banget dimandiin. sedangkan aku seminggu sekali mesti dimandiin. ini bener bener ga adil. Chiko emang lebih disayang sama kakak!
  7. Chiko bebas buat berantem sama pejantan lain di komplek demi mempertahankan martabat sebagai kucing pejantan tulen sekaligus mempertahankan wilayahnya. sedangkan aku, aku mau liat kucing lain berantem aja gak boleh sama kakak! ckckck..

"Chiko Verse"

Salamulekom. aku Chiko.

  1. Boy selalu bobo sama kakak dikamarnya. kakak bilang, "Boy itu kan bulunya panjang jadi dia harus bobo pake ac biar ga kepanasan, Ko." gak masalah sih, aku bisa tidur dimana aja asal di tempat empuk.
  2. Boy selalu dikasih susu sama kakak. aku juga sih dikasih, tapi aku ngga dikasih sebanyak dan sesering Boy. tapi gapapa, aku bisa dapet susu ditempat lain kok.
  3. Boy seriiiiiinnggg banget digendong-gendong sama kakak. aku ngga. padahal aku kan juga pengen sesekali digendong sama kakak. walaupun aku sendiri kurang begitu suka digendong sih..

dulu kita sering main bareng-bareng...

dulu kita akuuuuurrrr banget...

ini foto waktu kita masih kecil, sekitar 4 bulanan...

tapi aku tau Boy pasti sayang juga sama aku, kayak aku sayang juga sama dia...

Growing Up Kid (which is a bit too fast)

ok. I should make this blalala thingy on my head posted quickly before I forget about that. yes, I forget easily. (aging factor? oh come on, I'm not old. I haven't even hit 21 yet. and besides, it's 2--it's 2 and an 0--so yea, basically it's not the aging factor, it's just because I'm a normal human who could forget about anything easily. whatever.)

so let me begin this post with a simple (and maybe silly) question:
What is it like when you're a kid?

not to mention I didn't experience being a kid, but this kid, as far as I concern, is only a little kid in the late sixth grade of an elementary school, which means, she's just going to be a seventh grade freshman student in a junior high school. but what makes it different are:

  1. She got a Blog. hell yeah she has!! while me, I knew blogger ever since my friend used it on the eleventh grade of high. isn't that ironic?? and when I read her posts, God! she's doing it good! I mean it. grrr that's kinda envy me actually.
  2. She got a complete Social Networks. great job kid, you do better that I do. you got facebook account, twitter account, ym, msn, AND blogger account in your very very very very very young age PLUS you do your posts better than I did when I was on your age (I mean, I write too, only not that better than her at that age. I didn't blog at that age.).
  3. The most astonishing: Blackberry Pin!!! oohh kiddo come on!! it's not like you're gonna in touch every day of every hour with your kiddo friends, are you?? and, oh please, I just can't help myself--why would a kid use Blackberry for? ack.

now I'm like losing my mind. is this how technology working? is this what they say globalization? I do think that they work too fast. I mean, where's the time for kids to enjoy their childy moments? for them to play around, maybe with their toys or they peers, instead of sticking themselves in front of a computer (or smart phones)?

or, leaving the technology behind, is this kind of kid just growing old too fast?

I prefer the last one. meaning I'm staying younger a little too slow and growing old not so fast :p

if you wanna take a peek on her blog:
http://mixingpost.blogspot.com

so whaddaya think about this kid? or maybe aboutcha when yerr a kid?

Edmund

His name is Edmund. Edmund something. He's a British guy, as I expected. And he's also a Muslim, as I always expected.

Edmund is a smart kinda guy. He's loyal, he's kind, he's understanding and he's strong. He's cute, and yes of course, Edmund is a handsome British guy.

And fortunately *clears throat* Edmund almost looks like Adam Levine; my favourite, my number one, my hopes and dreams. :)

And there we met. He was all that gentle. He attracted me at the first sight. His blue eyes, fair complexioned (well we can actually say he's white), careless brown hair, thin lips, pointed nose, tall about umm... I don't know because I don't measure him myself how many feet tall he is, and his body, well it's not a six pack after all, but he's good. Oh way too good.

After couple days knowing each other, we get to know each other very well. He's a lovely man, I have to say. He got all that.

And finally... we're dating! yeaaaaaaaaaaaayyyyyyy!!

Edmund oh Edmund.
He's the shield of my heart.
He's the keeper of my tears.
He's the hero of my nights, sunshine of my mornings.
He's the Superman of my days.

Edmund.
Parachute when I fly too high.
Fireflies on the dark clouds.
Ice when I'm fired with emotion.
Red lights when I go to far.
Signs when I'm blank.

Edmund has his arms for me to hold on.
Shoulder to lay on.
And yes, his lips to kiss.

He never brings me down--he's the shield to my heart.

Edmund, oh Edmund...
When will you wake up and realize that I've been waiting for you, Ed?

...since after all, this Edmund is only an actor of my hallucination.

Life's Not Always Good--You Seek For It

People might have their own way to achieve the needs--no, the wants of their lifes. some get it easy, and some just get it hard. well, just like me.

To be considered, I am 20. and single. and spending almost every Saturday night stuck at home playing with my cat, or just going out with the family. I am almost 21. and single. and just now longing for something. well, perhaps that's love that I long.

yea, maybe it is. something to fit in my soul, something to complete another "C" in my life. to make it whole. to make it whole and complete.

you see, I've been in a mess for a quite long time (for ladies' time). it's like 3 months for an impossible story, 2 years for nothing, and lately, a month for a painful shit.

me and the significant others in those stories I elaborated were pretty close actually. some of em were just.. you know, "almost love". but no. the fact says no.

truth is just talking about pain, isnt it?

yea, I'm (a bit) old and I'm not in a relationship currently until this post is posted.

or perhaps until some times the post was posted. :p

but after all, suddenly I realize that Allah, has always and is always got a plan for me. and for anybody. I may get it hard, but somehow, in the back of my mind, somewhere in the bottom of my heart, I always know that I'll have it good somehow. even better. or way too better. yea, I know. I believe.

though I dont believe in love and hopes and expectations, though I always been acting sceptical, but I'm quite optimistic for a pessimist. :)

I may not get it easy like her, like him, or just like you. I may get it hard. even harder tahn the hardest. but someday you'll see me and my smile: whole and complete and.. happy.

do you know what the sceptics are looking for? well, you see, sceptics see it real. even if painful, they seek for the truth that lies even in a beLIEve.

I am 20. somewhere on May I'll hit 21. currently single. but yea, ready to mingle! :p
